Young Mothers/Women and Youth Empowerment

Young mothers in Bulembia Division and Rukoki Sub County in Kasese District are faced with many social challenges in their rural areas such as over dependence on parents, involvement in risky sexual behaviors, poor health, malnutrition among their born babies, low self-esteem, among others. These young mothers live in poor conditions which expose them to getting additional unintended pregnancies and high chances of contracting HIV/AIDS, including the risk to lose their born babies due to poor care. Young mothers are girls who are impregnated and produce children before they are 18 years of age (the legal age of marriage in Uganda) after their dropping out of school

4.jpgCommunity Hope Development Foundation (CHDF) is currently empowering young mothers with Basketry Skills which involve the use of local materials  as we plan how possible we can realize funding to enable the introduction of more new skills training such as carrion making, tailoring and others.

These young mothers after adopting the skill graduate and wait for the next skill training. There is already a graduated group in basketry which is currently earning some money individually through selling their made baskets. We call this a “Success”. We appreciate the efforts of our partners and the current customers who are buying these baskets. You can also be the next partner or customer.

In addition to skills development, we encourage the rural young mothers to put measures of improving their nutrition through kitchen gardening. Each young mother is advised to establish a small garden that requires less rain and efforts but having more than two types of vegetables (greens) to help them boost their children’s feeding and reduce on the expenditures of buying them from markets. We also encourage them to save a small percentage of what they earn from the sale of baskets for the future. Have a look at some of the already established kitchen gardens and one of the saving sessions.

Feel free to join us and enable us realize our goal of “Having rural younger mothers with improved livelihood”
